Obituary for Ethel L. Eckelmeyer

Ethel Eckelmeyer, age 100, celebrated Christ’s resurrection in a new way when she passed away on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017. Ethel was born in Philadelphia on February 26, 1917, the youngest of three daughters of Adam and Elva Hall.
Ethel graduated from Olney High School in 1935. In her senior year she sang the lead role in Martha, the first full opera ever performed by a Philadelphia public school.
Ethel married A.Raymond Eckelmeyer on August 30, 1940. Ray and Ethel opened the Loray Gift Shop together the day after they returned from their honeymoon, and this remained a family business for 19 years. As a young mother, she maintained the shop while Ray served overseas in WWII. They remained in Northeast Philadelphia where they raised their two boys, Ken and Arthur. The family was actively involved at Glading Memorial Presbyterian Church. One of her joys in life was being a grandmother to Kurt and Karin.
Ethel and Ray remained happily married for 67 years until Ray’s death in 2008. Ethel's strong faith sustained her in this difficult time. She continued to pursue a life that honored God through prayer, Bible study, and actively considering the needs of others.
Ethel is best remembered by those who love her as a devoted woman of God, a wonderful hostess, a loving wife, a dedicated mother, a supportive grandmother, and a genuine friend to many. She actively lived by one of her favorite Bible verses, “Trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
Ethel was a resident of Southampton Estates for many years. Her family is especially appreciative of the many there, both residents and members of the staff, who showed her genuine loving-kindness.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Southampton Estates Samaritan Fund or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Relatives and friends are are invited to gather on Friday, April 21, from 10 to 10:30 am at the Kirk & Nice Suburban Chapel, 333 County Line Rd., Feasterville, PA 19053 (215 - 354 - 0085), where Ethel's celebration of her life will begin at 10:30 am. Interment to follow in Sunset Memorial Park
